It’s just after 2am and here I am on my laptop writing this becuase I just couldn’t wait until tomorrow, or should I say today, to talk about this amazing event!

I attended my first ever book event tonight and I wasn’t disappointed. Penguin Teen Australia let almost 200 of us book nerds into the Brisbane City Cinema to hear from author’s Jodie McAlister and Fleur Ferris talk about their new releases Ironheart and Found respectively. It was fantastic to hear the authors talk about there books and gain an insight into the process and stories behind the novels.

I also spent way too much money on more books as my favourite Brisbane bookstore, Where The Wild Things Are, ran a pop up book store with recent/upcoming releases. I walked away with The Hazel Wood, Palace of Fires and Valentine, which Jodie actually signed for me tonight! She is an absolute gem and treasure, and if you ever meet her you’ll see what I mean, she is hilarious!

Thanks to Fox Studios we were treated to a preview screening of Love, Simon which comes out on March 29. Wow is all I have to say about this movie. It is incredible. In a time when the social conversation about representation and sexuality in the media this film really brings it to the forefront and highlights the need for it. I cried in both pain and happiness at various times in this movie becuase of the beautiful story it tells of Simon and his experience in coming out as a gay teenager. It’s powerful storytelling and a movie/book well worth getting to see/read. I want to say it’s my favourite movie of the year, but we’re only in March so I’ll hold off on that judgement. But I will say this, I love this film, its ace, go watch it, you won’t be disappointed.

Thanks again to Penguin Teen Australia and Fox, I had a fantastic time and can’t wait until next year!

Catherine
