Chit and chatter bounce around anecdotes and laughter
You tell your story and I tell mine, careful not to seem too eager
We’re here with friends but I can’t help it’s only you I pay attention
And from what I learned last week, I suspect it’s reciprocated
And so we’ve done this little dance of playful pointed words
Side stepping the truth we both know we are afraid to step right into
So yet another night will pass us by sitting at crowded tables
Stealing glances and teasing smiles inbetween fine wine and our friends fables
I try to concentrate on conversation but my mind is wayward
I draw the dregs of wine hoping courage be my chaser
And the ruckus of the evening quickly comes to its anticipated close
We’re both outside waiting on the curb under lamplight for our preordered rides
If not now, not ever, I awkwardly clear my throat
My heart drops…
Then it is soaring
