My early November read this month was Masters of Death by Olivie Blake, a fantasy romance/ghost story.
This book is about an estate agent.
Only she’s a vampire, the house on sale is haunted, and its ghost was murdered.
When Viola Marek hires Fox D’Mora to deal with her ghost-infested mansion, she expects a competent medium. But unbeknownst to Viola, Fox is a fraud – despite being the godson of Death.
As the mystery unfolds, Viola and Fox are drawn into a quest that neither wants, nor expects. And they’ll need the help of a demonic personal trainer, a sharp-voiced angel and a love-stricken reaper. As it transpires, the difference between a mysterious lost love and a dead body isn’t nearly as distinct as you’d hope . . .
I bought this book as a buddy read at the end of October when my friend was visiting. We picked it up from my local Dymocks store and sat in a cafe reading over a chocolate milkshakes. After she returned to Queensland we both kept reading, and she has been loving this. But for myself, this is a DNF – did not finish. I don’t DNF often but I just couldn’t get into this book even though I stuck it out 100 pages. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it. It was just, fine.
There were some issues I found challenging, the pacing and jumping between present and past among the cast of characters interrupted the flow of the plot for me. It was harder to connect with characters and feel invested in them given it jumped between them all so much.
On the flip side I can appreciate the witty banter and offbeat humour, the colourful characters and how other readers out there may love this book. Perhaps it was the wrong timing for me to pick up something like this, but this time, it just wasn’t for me.
What I liked:
- Variety of Characters
- Fun mystery set up
- witty banter
- Found family
- offbeat humour
What I disliked:
- Jumping around between timelines/characters
- confusing plot
- Difficult to connect to so many characters
Rating: Did Not Finish
Genre: Contemporary Fantasy Romance/Ghost Stories
Onto the next read,
