Escapril day 6! Today’s prompt was A Childhood Memory. This one was inspired by a particular family holiday that forever changed my relationship with bugs…

Poem Text:
I use to think I was a smart child, and I was, but I was also incredibly stupid
The kind of stupid who ran in the rain, and hit behind a tree on the campground
The kind of stupid who wanted to scare her cousins, so eager to jump out at them
The kind of stupid who didn’t notice the ants nest she’d stood on, and the ants she’d upset
The kind of stupid who screamed as they left red welts on exposed skin because she wore flip flops
The kind of stupid who went crying back to mum and dad in pain, a sound the whole campground could hear
The kind of stupid who sheepishly hid in the tent with ice and bite cream thinking scaring her cousins wasn’t worth it anymore
As I said, I could be a stupid kid, and that non-thinking version of me came out at least once every camping trip
I never made the same stupid mistake twice, but I certainly made many through my childhood
At least now I can look back and laugh at most of them
Oh, and I am afraid of bugs now
Thanks kid me
