Escapril 2022: Taxidermy

April 14, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

I’ve always found museums strange and otherworldly Down each hall collections of the past carefully staged behind glass In one stands plinths of ceramic artefacts, once a bowl or cup or plate  In another perfectly preserved species we systematically eliminated  Museums are a horrifying place with these creatures painful displayed A reminder of just how…

Escapril 2022: Palmful

April 13, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

Carefree in a tended garden a small child plays Running between rows of hyacinths chasing butterflies and bees A mother watches on from a shady spot under a swaying tree As little one squeals and laughs at her wild imagination Mother rests her eyes and breathes in the sweet soft wind And opens them to…

Escapril 2022: I Think We’re Lost

April 12, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

You turn the map this way and that and stare at the ever changing horizon The paper distorts one way then another with ever changing topography It like magic but the fearful kind that pulls the earth from underneath you  The frantic worry from years ago has shifted into solemn resignation   Blink and the…

Escapril 2022: An Odd Number Of…

April 11, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

I flex my fingers and curl them tight Stretch my toes and scrunch them close Seems so odd how important these are to me Loose one, the wrong one, and suddenly their even but the remaining are weakened   I flex my fingers and curl them tight Stretch my toes and scrunch them close How…

Escapril 2022: Magnification

April 10, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

From afar it’s nothing but a ball of fluff on a stick in the wind But pick it and look in close you might see dreams within With a strong breath watch it disappear on a gentle twist of air  There goes the wishes carefully made off to come true without a care   Prompt:…

Escapril 2022: We’re Not Alone

April 9, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

Shutters once latched bang listlessly against the glass A splintered door hangs precariously from its frame  A shattered bulb swings and flickers over the sideways table The walls shift and change and bubble where the blood splattered  A shriek and howl, then haunting silence  Sometimes we don’t get a warning   Prompt: We’re Not Alone

Escapril 2022: ____ As Medicine

April 8, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

It’s French Earl Grey with a dash of milk The smell of old books in a second hand store The flick of a paintbrush of gold on a page   It’s potatoes and stew on a cold winters night The warmth of a hug when times are hard The gentle touch when words fail  …

Escapril 2022: Body Swap

April 7, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

They say that this time is when I’m prime and it gets worse from here  But my bones already ache and break under the heaviness of this decade And disease runs rife and wars take life on a global stage Everyday my brain hurting, it’s concerning how much I’m losing capacity to think    They…

Escapril 2022: Time (Non-linear)

April 6, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

Hours early and minutes late, the tick tick tick of eager paranoia  I have to see the plane is there with nervous hours spare though I know better Spiraled thoughts of no taxi cabs and long security lines still haunt this frequent flyer But it is always so much faster, check points ticked in record…

Escapril 2022: Crush

April 5, 2022September 15, 2022 By Catherine Rose Gunther

Chit and chatter bounce around anecdotes and laughter You tell your story and I tell mine, careful not to seem too eager We’re here with friends but I can’t help it’s only you I pay attention And from what I learned last week, I suspect it’s reciprocated And so we’ve done this little dance of…

Over the last few weeks I’ve been going through Over the last few weeks I’ve been going through some heavy duty editing of my novel which has been so rewarding seeing it come together better than ever. But being sick this week I took a break and drew out the world map and Academy map from my book which was a lot of fun. Looking forward to finishing these edits in the next month so I can start sharing with beta readers!! ✨#editing #mapmaking #fantasymap #fantasynovel #fantasybook #novel #writer #currentlywriting #betareaders #novelwriting #manuscript #manuscriptedits

In the spirit of reconciliation I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. I pay my respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. The land on which I work and live belongs to the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation.
